Artist's Description
Although in essence a two masted brig "Leonidas", along with many commercial vessels converted to small warships for the needs of the Greek Revolution of 1821, was also called a corvette to indicate exactly this modification.
Another reason pointed out often by historians is the additional sails the Greek captains would incorporate even on those two masted rigs, well before the revolution, for the necessary maneuverability and speed needed to avoid pirates but also evade the British navy vessels acting as blockade runners during the Napoleonic wars.
"Leonidas" was built in the island of Hydra in 1810 for the Tombazis brothers who both played significant roles during war of independence.

His love and admiration for the craftsmanship and form of the sailing-ships of the past, coupled with the adventurous & somewhat magical atmosphere of the "age of sail" is what fuels the intriguing work of Panagiotis Mastrantonis.
