Artist's Description
Steam frigates, also known as screw frigates were hybrid steam-powered warships with sails.
"Hellas" was built in England between 1859 - 1861 and initially was named "Amalia" in honor of the wife of the first king of the newly independent Greek state Othon.
It was used almost immediately used to suppress the revolts of Nafplio and Kythnos which aimed to overthrow the king, and was renamed to "Hellas" once the royal couple was exiled in 1862.
A year later it carried the new king (George the first) to Greece and it was also the same ship upon which the last commissioner of the Ionian islands - which had been protectorate of Great Britain since 1815 - handed over the flag, marking their unification with the state of Greece.

After studying freehand drawing at the Art School of George and Eleni Vakalo and architectural drawing at the Athens Technological Institute, he worked as a professional architectural modeler until 1995. Since then he engaged exclusively in drawing his sailing ship portraits, using a unique mixed technique of freehand...
