Description
Otherwise known as brigantino, it was a commercial sailing ship with a single deck and two very tall masts. Forerunner of the briki (brig) it was used widely in the pursuit of pirates, but also in curbing the Turkish navy during the Greek war of independence of 1821.
With the brigantines, the Greeks traveled to the Black Sea, the Mediterranean and beyond, to the ocean, America, the British Isles and the Baltic. It was the most common type of medium-sized sailing vessel.
