Description
"Aris" the flagship of Andreas Miaoulis during the Greek war for independence (1821-1832).
Andreas Vokos, nicknamed Miaoulis, was a Hydriot Greek admiral and politician who commanded the Greek naval forces with great success against the Ottoman fleet.
He had been a merchant captain and trader who had gained wealth during the Napoleonic wars breaking numerous times the blockade of French ports by the Brittish fleet.
As early as 1822 Miaoulis was appointed admiral of the swarm of small vessels which formed the insurgent fleet and commanded the expedition sent to take revenge for the massacre of Chios in the same year.
The original artwork is part of the collection & permanent exhibition of the "Hydra Historical Archive and Museum".
