Description
The brig "Alexandros" was built in 1818 in the Greek island of Syros and fought among the fleet of Psara island throughout the Greek war for independence (1821-1829).
Afterwards it continued it's commercial activities traveling many times as far as Boston, where on September 8, 1938, "BOSTON POST" publishes an article titled "The Greek Briki", which praises the construction & speed of the ship as well as the sailmanship of its captain.
Also the Greek newspaper "Athena" (January 19th 1838) twenty years after it was built, still describes it as "one of the most beautiful Greek Merchant Ships."
Tragically in that same year it was to be destroyed by accidental fire in the port of Syros, the very place it was originally built twenty years before.
This painting was made in honor of this wonderful ship and its tragic end.
