Artist's Description

Martingana (or Martigo) was a medium-sized commercial sailing ship built on most of the main Greek shipbuilding islands during the second half of the 18th century, with a widespread use throughout the Mediterranean, from the East Aegean to the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic seas (with some rigging modifications).

The first cruiser ship of the island of Samos was the Martigo of captain Manolis Hadzigeorgiou, named “Panagia” (“Virgin Mary”) and converted from a commercial ship to a cruiser, following the intervention of Dimitris Themelis, the General Commissioner of the “Filiki Eteria”*.

*“Society of Friends”, was a secret 19th century organization whose purpose was to overthrow the Ottoman rule of Greece and establish an independent Greek state.

After studying freehand drawing at the Art School of George and Eleni Vakalo and architectural drawing at the Athens Technological Institute, he worked as a professional architectural modeler until 1995. Since then he engaged exclusively in drawing his sailing ship portraits, using a unique mixed technique of freehand...
