Description
The fusta or fuste (also called foist) was a narrow, light and fast ship with shallow draft, usualy powered by both oars and sail, resembling a small galley, used mostly during the 17th & 18th centuries.
Its speed, mobility, capability to move without wind, and its ability to operate in small shallow coves - crucial for hiding in coastal waters before pouncing on a passing ship but also to flee from war galleys and heavy sailing ships that wouldn't risk pursuit there - made it ideal for war and piracy.
