The Goleta was an elegant ship with a usually round stern, beautiful rigging, fast and agile. The Greeks began to build small two-masted Goletes of 8-10 tons in the beginning of the 19th century gradualy scaling them up to become ships. Armed with 6 12-liter cannons and one on the bow for the offense, they were used extensively & effectively in the struggle for independence of 1821.
