Artist's Description
The upper part of the main mast (main-topgallant-mast) of the ship featuring structural elements for extra rigging support as well as the "Coffa" (or crow's nest) used as a lookout point.
"Coffa" derives from the ancient Greek word meaning basket (as in woven container), since in some cases the platform was enclosed by such a structure to protect the look-out from falling off.
Since the crow's nest is almost the farthest point away from the ship's center of mass, rotational movement of the ship is amplified and could lead to severe seasickness, even in accustomed sailors.

His love and admiration for the craftsmanship and form of the sailing-ships of the past, coupled with the adventurous & somewhat magical atmosphere of the "age of sail" is what fuels the intriguing work of Panagiotis Mastrantonis. Born in 1940 in Piraeus, Greece and with family roots from the islands of Hydra and Ios, the sea and maritime scenery seems to have had a lasting underlying influence on his creative psyche. After studying freehand drawing at the Art School of George and Eleni Vakalo and architectural drawing at the Athens Technological Institute, he worked as a professional architectural modeler until 1995.
